'Colors of the uprising'

Ene Jessicah Yaknoabasi

Curator

Ene Jessicah Yaknoabasi is an emerging abstract realism artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. From an early age, she showed a great passion for art and was always eager to experiment and improve on her skills. This attribute earned her a place among the best graduating students of the Department of Fine Arts of the University of Uyo, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Fine and Applied Arts, with specialization in Textiles.

A specialist in textiles, Jessicah’s inclination to experiment with materials and processes, led her to having a good grasp of other aspects of art. Because of her love for the expressiveness of the paint medium, in 2018, she decided to start create works in the genre of painting. She derives inspiration from the formal elegance of the human body, which she applies elements like bright colours, textures to create Afrocentric symbols and patterns to portray the beauty and diversity of her culture as an African woman.

Jessicah uses the instrumentality of her paintings to give voice to the struggles and triumphs of the African people. She does this by creating works of art that reflect the sensibilities of her immediate society. She believes that her work will continue to evolve until it goes beyond the canvas to involve real people, leading to the promotion and empowerment of women and children. Jessicah loves sharing physically in the honest emotional stories of traumatized but hopeful people, which also charges her artistic messages.

This aspect of her work can inspire changes that resonate with wider audiences. Jessicah creates paints predominantly with oil colours and acrylic mediums while her aspect of specialization still casts its influences on her work. Most of her compositions are hand-painted African prints on figurative subjects. She merges elements of textile design and painting to create colourful Afrocentric fabric patterns from her imagination.

Jessicah sometimes uses mixed media to add textures and depth to enhance the expressiveness and perception of her paintings for everyone, especially for the visually impaired. She expects art lovers to perceive her works through the various senses such as sight, touch and others.

Jessicah has participated in some group exhibitions as well as art sales in Nigeria. Many of her works are in some individual and corporate collections in Nigeria and abroad.
